My Philosophy of Teaching
I have chosen to teach because I am passionate about helping others and working with children. Each student’s success, safety, and well-being is my top priority. Every decision that I make will be in the best interest of my students.
A teacher’s role is to help students develop their potential and my main concern as a teacher is to do my best to meet each of my students’ needs. With my experience working in inner-city schools, I understand the diversity amongst the students' learning levels. I recognize how important it is to differentiate instruction. I believe that each child is unique, must be challenged individually, and that no two students learn the same way. One of my goals as a teacher is to be able to challenge students without discouraging them.
I believe in the importance of creating a positive learning environment where students feel safe to be themselves, to explore and to discover on their own. In my class, students will have a sense of belonging.
Having played many team sports and being a lifeguard in Dorval for eight years, I understand the importance of teamwork and the need to support one another. I also believe in the necessity of students staying active and have seen the benefits of incorporating physical activity within my lessons. These are values that I plan on implementing within my own classroom.
I believe that the best kind of teacher is one who can inspire his/her students to become active learners and critical thinkers. As a teacher, I demonstrate curiosity so that my students develop a passion for learning. Since I began my student teaching in 2009, I have had many opportunities to experiment with and learn from the value of using technology in the classroom. I am comfortable teaching with SMART Boards and have begun incorporating iPads in the classroom as well. I recently learned how to use apps such as Aurasma, Book Creator, Explain Everything and QR Codes, which all enhance learning and help foster creativity. I want my students to understand that learning means we are continually growing and everyone can learn new things each day, even teachers.
As human beings, we all need motivation and encouragement to keep us going. I believe in the power of praise, recognition and positive reinforcement. I want to encourage students to do the very best that they can. I want to show them the value of taking pride in the quality of their work. The key to success is to believe in oneself and the best way to instill this belief in my students is for me to show them that I believe in each one of them. I hold this value close to my heart because my grade 4 teacher realized my potential and believed in me, and it is because of his support and belief that I decided to become a teacher.
