Welcome to my digital teaching portfolio! My name is Erica Kresevic and I am a Master's graduate in the Inclusive Education program at McGill University with ten years of experience teaching at the elementary school level.
As a child, I always loved going to school. I enjoyed learning new things and would often be very excited to share with my family what I did at school that day. I was very lucky to have had great teachers throughout my education, but in fourth grade, I had an amazing teacher who brought learning to a different level. My teacher, Mr. Angelo, taught us to be independent and how to take charge of our own learning. We were shown what it meant to be a “quality student” and the importance of taking pride in our work. Mr. Angelo allowed me, alongside my friends, to start a homework club every Friday afternoon to assist our classmates in subjects they were struggling with. It was because of Mr. Angelo and the amazing experiences I had that year that inspired me to become a teacher. In high school, I had the very rewarding experience of being a Big Sister of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada mentorship program and I started tutoring students at the nearby elementary school. I then started my first official job as a lifeguard for eight years where I taught swimming lessons to kids of all ages, coached the 8 & under swim team, and taught aqua-jogging classes to adults. I enjoyed working with children so much that it reinforced my belief that teaching was the profession for me. |
For the third placement of my teaching practicum, I found out that I was placed in a fourth grade classroom with none other than Mr. Angelo! What an amazing opportunity I had to spend four months learning from him again. He has supported me, made me feel comfortable in the classroom and with the staff, and has given me so much confidence as a teacher. Mr. Angelo has taught me how to become a “quality teacher”.
After completing my Bachelor’s of Education, I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Inclusive Education to acquire new tools and strategies to help reach all students in my classroom. The insight that I gained throughout this degree helped me advocate for my students’ rights and needs when I taught a special education class for three years.
One of my goals as a teacher is to give my students the opportunity to express themselves and to encourage them to take charge of their own learning. My dream is to become a teacher as powerful and life-changing for my students as Mr. Angelo was for me.
